Countdown Begins for Bali’s Renowned Ubud Writers and Readers Festival

The eagerly awaited Ubud Writers and Readers Festival is returning to Bali for its 22nd edition this year, inviting writers, thinkers, and creatives from around the globe to gather in the cultural heart of Ubud for a celebration of literature and ideas. This four-day event, one of Southeast Asia’s premier literary festivals, is set to take place from October 29 to November 2, 2025.

The theme raises the question of whether wisdom and innovation can coexist for the greater good or if the rapid growth of technology might outpace moral and spiritual progress.

A Gathering of Global Voices and Inspiring Speakers

The festival’s programming includes author talks, panel discussions, literary workshops, live performances, late-night readings, and much more. These events will provide an immersive experience for attendees, inviting them to explore literature in all its forms, from the written word to spoken poetry and musical performances.

Bringing the Theme to Life: Festival Art by Aldilla Laras

This year’s theme is visually brought to life by artist Aldilla Laras, who is creating festival artwork that blends Balinese mythology, collage techniques, and the traditional lontar (Balinese palm leaf manuscripts). Laras aims for her artwork to offer viewers a reflective and slow engagement with the piece, encouraging them to decode the Sanskrit inscriptions and discover deeper layers of meaning as they interact with the work.

Laras expressed her hope that the festival-goers will connect with the art in a personal way, making it a lasting part of their festival experience. She is also excited to absorb the atmosphere of the event and leave with new books in hand.

A Longstanding Tradition of Literary Excellence

Since its inception, the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival has grown into a global hub for literary and cultural exchange. Founded in response to the tragic 2002 Bali bombing, the festival now brings together some of the world’s most influential authors and thinkers to promote cross-cultural dialogue. It has grown from a local initiative into an international celebration of literature, a beacon for empowerment and idea-sharing in an ever-changing world.

A Stellar Lineup of Writers and Thinkers

Among the prominent speakers making their return to the stage this year are Shinta Febriany, a respected playwright and poet from Eastern Indonesia; Ratih Kumala, the recipient of the 2024 Chommanard Women’s Literary Award; and Ni Made Purnamasari, an acclaimed Balinese writer. In addition, the 2025 festival will feature international figures such as Banu Mushtaq, an Indian author and women’s rights activist; Pico Iyer, the British-born essayist and novelist; and Omar El Akkad, the award-winning American novelist.

The festival is also set to host the 2025 International Booker Prize, further solidifying its status as a global platform for literary excellence. As the event grows, it continues to foster an environment for literary discourse, performance, and the sharing of ideas that transcend borders and cultures.

Tickets and Festival Information

Tickets for the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2025 are now available for purchase on the official festival website. With an exciting lineup and a thought-provoking theme, this year’s event promises to be an unforgettable celebration of literature, creativity, and global conversation.
